Julia Fiona Roberts' parents are Walter Grady Roberts and Betty Lou Bredemus. Roberts is fourth in the Roberts generation that has lived in Atlanta starting with her farmer great-grandfather John Pendleton Roberts. In the early years of his life the father of her mother became obsessed by the theatre. As a college students at Emory University from 1952 to 1954, he took part in several performances. In 1953, he enlisted in the Air Force. While stationed at Biloxi in Mississippi, he appeared in a play together with Betty Lou Bredemus. Eric Anthony was their first born. They got married in the year 1957. Walter attended Tulane University at New Orleans in the year 1957, after they had separated from the US Air Force. Walter began working for Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio in 1960. The year 1964 was when Walter as well as Betty Lou began production on the local Saturday morning children's television show called Bum Bum and His Buddies which they funded by on their own. In 1964 Walter and Betty Lou established the Actors and Writers Workshop. It ran for about six years. They were joined by Lelisa Billingsley (also known as Lisa) as well as Julia (also known as Julie) in this time.
