
DeWitt began performing on stage at the age of 13. She graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree at Ball State University. In the following year, as she was performing in summer productions she was convinced by the director to join UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program,where she received the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship and the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt stated that she had never ever met Abe Vigoda during her time at UCLA. Dewitt's portrayal of Janet Wood in Three's Company's 1977-84 season is the one that made her the most well-known. She was cast in the show's pilot and was selected. Janet was also featured in an episode of The Ropers in which she starred in from 1979. After Three's Company ended in 1984, DeWitt appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Loves in 1984, after which she quit acting for a number of years. The actress returned to acting in a part in a production of Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse in June 1991. The actress later appeared in the 1995 TV comedy film Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain featured the character based on her voiced by a different actress in 1997. She was featured in the episode Cybill, and had an appearance on the last episode of Living Single. She's been on shows on TV such as Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special, and Call of the Wild in 2000.
